For: Dentists,
‘THE EVOLVING ROLE OF SPORTS DENTISTS-FROM TRAUMA TO PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT’
This day-long course is designed to introduce dental professionals to the evolving world of the Sports Dentists. I shall cover dealing with dental and oro-facial trauma, primarily in the sporting context as well as in the dental surgery environment. We shall discuss the changing role of the Sports Dentist and how research, particularly in the last 10 years, has developed our role from simply repairing fractured teeth to working with elite athletes to improve their athletic performance.
I shall look at the role of prevention and link the use of mouthguards with VO2 levels, athletes comfort and monitoring concussion levels.
I shall look at the literature that indicates the link between poor oral health and athletic performance and introduce the concept of oro-health screening in elite sport. Finally I shall offer some personal experiences as a Sports Dentist at major sporting events and venues.
Peter graduated in 1975 at University College Hospital, London. Whilst in general dental practice for 40 years, he became involved in academic practice by teaching on a restorative programme at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, London, UK. This led to the completion of his PhD looking into the impact of postgraduate dental education on dental practitioners, which has enabled him to become deputy director of the postgraduate restorative programme, specifically looking after the Master's students. Peter has now supervised approximately 40 MSc projects many of which have been published or presented at conferences.
Having had the opportunity to work with professional athletes in practice, including footballers, rugby players and golfers, he was delighted to take over the running of the Sports Dentistry continuing professional development course at UCL Eastman Dental Institute in 2007. Peter has developed the CPD course into a part-time, blended learning programme, leading to a Master’s degree in Sports Dentistry-Oral Health in Sport. The programme teaches dental practitioners to care for elite and recreational athletes and includes dealing with dental trauma, the implications of poor oral health on athletic performance, restorative challenges of athletes, the use of mouthguards and undertaking research in sports dentistry. Peter published a Sports Dentistry text-book in October 2018, which is being used for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He has had the opportunity to lecture nationally and internationally about Sports Dentistry and educational topics such as feedback, confidence, and reflection. Peter has also been chosen to participate at major sporting events around the world as a Sports Dentist, including London Olympic games and the World Martial Arts championship in Turkmenistan and has recently been involved in organising dental facilities at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK in July/Aug this year, whilst working as a ‘Field of Play’ sports dentist. He is currently Director of the Master’s Degree in Sports Dentistry-Oral Health in Sports programme at UCL Eastman Dental Institute. His current research interests include: the development of Smart mouthguards, the changing pH of saliva during exercise and the impact of poor oral health on athletic performance.
