Dr Crystal Marruganti is an award-winning dentist & periodontal (gum) expert, researcher, academic, and international lecturer, currently based in London, and also holding teaching positions in Italy for the Undergraduate and the Postgraduate degrees at the University of Siena (Italy). She earned her Dentistry degree from the University of Florence (Italy) and completed her advanced clinical training and PhD in Periodontology at the University of Siena (Italy) in 2023. Furthermore, she also received the habilitation as Professor in Periodontology by the Italian Ministry of University & Research. Dr Marruganti’s clinical activity is focused on Periodontology & Implant Dentistry, treating all sorts of gum and implant related diseases and conditions (both non-surgical and surgical treatments), with specific focus also on Cosmetic Periodontics, that is the management of gum recessions and gummy smiles.
Dr Marruganti received numerous accolades for her significant contribution to Periodontology, including the H.M. Goldman Prize from the Italian Society of Periodontology, the Robert Frank Prize and the Hatton Award from the International Association for Dental Research, as well as the Sir Wilfred Fish Prize from the British Society of Periodontology. She also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Osseointegration and the Journal of Periodontal Research, as well as reviews for leading journals in periodontology and implant dentistry. Dr Marruganti has also contributed to multiple articles leading to the clinical guidelines set out by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) for the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions.
With over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals cited more than 1000 times, Dr Marruganti’s research focuses on the interplay between periodontal disease, lifestyle factors, and systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and psoriasis. Her research also focused on the factors influencing the long-term outcomes of dental implants. Due to her holistic and cutting-edge approach to dental and periodontal care, Dr Marruganti has been featured multiple times in national and international news, including the Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, Forbes, and The London Standard.
In 2025, Dr Marruganti was the first ever dentist to be included among the Forbes 30 Under 30 most influential people in Europe for Science & Healthcare due to her pioneering research on oral and systemic health, and for uncovering the first established link between psoriasis and gum disease.
