AM -This lecture aims to improve the audience's understanding of managing the oral health needs of the ageing population. Many older people will be increasingly vulnerable due to increasing cognitive, medical, and physical disabilities that significantly impact oral health and dental care needs. Dental teams must ensure that prevention of dental disease is a priority and that treatment planning is pragmatic and considers the future needs of the ageing patient.

PM- To understand and or refresh our understanding of record keeping as well as understand the growing influence of AI in dental record keeping. This lecture and case studies will provide a better appreciation of what the GDC expects from our record keeping and will also cover common problems with record keeping that gets us into trouble.

  • Increase understanding of how to make adaptation for older people with disabilities.
  • Increase awareness of some safety considerations for removable prosthodontics in the older population.
  • Discuss how dental care professionals can be involved in oral health improvement programmes.
  • Discuss the importance of safeguarding in the older population

Speakers

Mili Doshi MBE

Mili is a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at Surrey and Sussex Health Care NHS Trust and the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability. Mili developed the Health Education England national initiative ‘Mouth Care Matters’ to improve oral health of adults in hospitals. Mili is the past president and current chair of the British Society of Gerodontology. She is the author of several scientific articles and editor of a book on the oral health of older people. Mili is the co-chair of the special care and Paediatric Managed Clinical Network. Mili was awarded an MBE in 2018 for service to NHS dentistry and the BDA award for excellence for contribution to special care dentistry in 2023.

Dr Mabel Saw

Mabel was involved in general practice for more than 30 years, both in NHS and private settings. Since 2016 she has also worked with the GDC as a Clinical Advisor and Expert Witness, and with the major dental indemnity organisations. She is a professional Mentor and Coach, supporting dental registrants in difficulty with patient complaints and GDC Fitness to Practice matters. She delivers CPD courses on Dental Law and Ethics and has published several articles in the BDJ in Practice on Mentoring.
